This is one of my all time favorite products to make. I used to pay $24 for my favorite lip scrub until I found out how easy it was. I knew there had to be a better alternative and I’m sharing it with you today that costs less than $0.10 to make. I have a ton of various clear containers I purchased in bulk years ago so I used one about the size of a mineral makeup foundation size. You can use an empty lip balm jar, bead jar, or anything that seals and is small. My friend got a 7-day pill container and separated them into individual containers and spruced it up with some Mod Podge and pretty paper as party gifts.
What is a lip scrub and why do I need it?
Lip scrubs are a gentle sugar based exfoliant that scrubs away the dead skin off your lips. You want pretty and healthy lips and lip scrubs are a life saver for those with chapped lips. Just remember don’t over exfoliate, and be sure to apply a lip moisturizer afterwards. Living in Arizona with allergies I tend to get really bad chapped lips so I prefer Sara Happ’s Lip Slip to keep them soft and supple. I do this about once a week to ensure my lips look healthy without being chapped.
Okay let’s get started on how to make this nifty lip saver.
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (thicker the better) ($0.02)
- 2 tbsp sugar ($0.05)
- Optional: dab of petroleum jelly to thicken if your syrup isn’t thick (I prefer Aquaphor) ($0.02)
- Container: you can recycle an old lip balm jar if you have one or get creative
Step by Step Tutorial:
Add 1 tbsp. of syrup into a mixing cup or small glass bowl. As you can see from the pic above I got ahead and put it in the lip balm jar, not a good idea. 😉
Add 2 tbsp. of sugar into the maple syrup.
Mix maple syrup and sugar together with a craft stick or sanitized spoon. Add a dab of petroleum jelly if you need to thicken it up.
Now you can scoop your newly made lip scrub into your clean container. Grab a small bit on your index finger and in a rotating motion, gently scrub your lips and apply moisturizer. Voila! Pretty, luscious lips for the perfect pout.
