I love caramel! I stock up on it the one ingredient I need to make an easy caramel sauce any chance I get. You can typically find sweetened condensed milk on sale during the fall baking season. After the season is over it’s kind of touch and go on sales since it’s more of a seasonal item. Nonetheless, its not a pricey purchase in the off season and still cheaper than a bottle of caramel sauce. Besides, you feel really cool making it yourself. Heck you can even think about upcoming gift giving season and give them as gifts in jars. Just add a cute label and some ribbon and you have a yummy diy gift from the heart. Trust me, people eat this stuff up! Ha, see what I did there… 😉
Easy One Ingredient Caramel Sauce or Dulce De Leche
- 14 oz can of Sweetened Condensed Milk (Eagle brand is best for this in my opinion, it seems smoother to me.)
- Add water to large or deep pot and place cans with labels removed into water. Make sure you have a few inches of water above your sealed cans and bring water to boil.
- Reduce heat to medium and simmer for about 3 hours. During this time be sure the water level stays above the can. Add water if levels drop below can.
- Remove pot from burner and let it cool before opening can.
If you prefer a darker, thicker consistency you can continue to boil. I like to scoop mine into some half pint jars and store it that way if I’m not using it all.
