Are you ready to find out what goes bump in the night up in Washington? I’m not in WA but lots of research went into this for my son, the soldier and his friends. Halloween is fast approaching and I thought this would be something they’d like, plus it’s very interesting. He’s a lot like me, we both are interested by the unexplained and paranormal things that occur in the world. And haunted places are pretty interesting, at least if you’re into the paranormal or unknown.
Haunted in Washington
Washington is a pretty wet state with an average rainfall of 38 inches. It is also America’s coffee capital, with more beans being roasted here than any other state. We’re not here to talk about coffee, though. We’re here to talk about ghosts!
The Real Deal
Northern State Hospital was built in 1909 to accommodate for Washington’s already overcrowded asylums. You would be surprised at some of the things people were admitted to Northern State Hospital for. Postmenopausal women were admitted there for being “too excitable”, and many orphaned children were committed for what we know today as Attention Deficit Disorder. The staff thought assigning patients physical labor as treatment, such as farming, would help their recovery. Doctors also used electroshock therapy and lobotomy for treatment of mental illness.
In 1973, the hospital was shut down and part of it was transformed into a Job Corp facility and drug treatment center. They only use some of the buildings; the rest have either been torn down or are falling apart. Local citizens put up a monument to recognize the forgotten dead in the overgrown cemetery. Many people believe there are tortured souls still walking the halls of this hospital. Reports of a little girl playing with a red ball have been made, and a nurse pushing a man in a wheelchair has also been spotted. I bet the chills you get from walking the halls at Northern State are intense!
Holland Road has two ghost stories attached to it. It is said to be haunted by a young girl who was struck by a drunk driver while riding her horse, which is the most famous story told about Holland Road. Legend states that the drunken man buried the young girl and escaped the scene, unnoticed. Apparitions of a horse and a little girl have been reported around this area. The other story is of an old man who went to get his mail late at night and struck by a group of teens who were driving drunk. Rumor has it, if you are driving down the road with your lights off, you will see shadows moving around. Obviously, this is NOT recommended, for safety reasons.
Carnation Cemetery is listed on the Best Haunted Graveyard Tours in Seattle. People have reported experiencing pain, hearing footsteps, and hearing whispers in their ears while visiting this cemetery. A woman wearing a white dress has been seen walking with a young boy. Will you see figures out of the corner of your eye?
Spooked in Seattle offers several different ghost tours by real ghost hunters. Their ghastly tours offer all the sordid details of the ‘underground’, crimes of passion, mayhem and murder. I double dog dare you to take the 2 hour Underground Ghost Hunt tour. Its a very limited, once a month ghost tour underneath the city. It’s a great view of history not open to the public. Are you ready to lurk in the darkness of Seattle’s haunted underbelly?
